Copenhagen in the house

If you've ever seen any images of Henrik Vibskov's fashion shows, you know he's got a Willy Wonka mentality that spans beyond fashion. He's in town to celebrate the book release for The Fringe Projects tonight, an ongoing art project Vibskov does with visual artist Andreas Emenius where they explore various "fringes" in all sorts of shapes and materials.

The duo will also guest dj on Saturday at the BLVCK BOX party downtown.

HERE AND NOW/AND NOWHERE

Before some of you peace out for labor day weekend, make sure you go to Deitch Projects to check out one of my favorite artists, Tauba Auerbach. Her new exhibition, titled Here and Now/And Nowhere opens on Thursday night (6-9pm) and will feature a variety of her work including paintings that explore dimension and trick the eye, photographs, and a sculpture that will reside half outside and half inside the gallery. Also part of the opening is a performance by Auerglass (Tauba and her friend Cameron Mesirow of the band Glasser) in which the pair will play a composition on a wooden pump organ. Glasser will perform afterwards at 8pm. Come out Thursday, you won't regret it!

Acid Drop Opening

In case you missed it, Tues night was the opening for Kenneth Cappello's Acid Drop show at Milk Gallery. It featured an epic selection of skate pics from his youth curated by the amazing Tim Barber. Those kids had some seriously sick style back then! We rolled up early to "beat the crowd" but the gallery filled up in a matter of minutes. After chugging several free drinks and running into some kids I knew, I decided to skip around like a maniac and grab some snaps of the party scene.

This is my girl D. She likes music and making peace signs.

I had to show off my armpit fringe (pic by Jess).

This kid hung out with us after the opening and showed off for the camera.

Richard Kern Retrospective

A New York art icon, Richard Kern has described photography as a "way to get into intimate situations with other people." His provocative portraits, as Kern prefers to call them, have garnered a wide audience over the course of his career, playing off the artist's admitted voyeurism against his model's evident exhibitionism. There's been a lot of interest in his work the past few years, including the release of several books, a t-shirt capsule collection with our friends at Mishka (of which I'm the proud owner of one), and his series on VBS Shot By Kern.

If you're a fan of his work, curious to learn more, or just like looking at naked ladies, you should not miss his show opening tomorrow night in NYC! Rental Gallery will host the exhibit, showing a retrospective of his work from 1980-2009.

Transformations Opening Party

Thursday night, I kicked off fashion week by heading to the Transformations opening with my friend Ellen (who's on the cover of Time Out btw!). The show featured some compelling portraits taken by Paul Rowland, founder of the modeling agencies Women and Supreme, attempting to capture models in their true state. I would say he succeeded—the images were strikingly beautiful and worth a close look. The show is up till the 20th if you want to stop by.

The party itself was infested with models, including Natasha Poly and Heather Marks. Oh and Kate Mulleavy (one of the Rodarte sisters) was there! I felt like bowing down to her, but that would have been weird.

I took this snap of model Daiane Conterato of Supreme in a killer dress. I kept staring at it but forgot to ask who it was by (I think Rodarte). She was on the cover of Vogue Brazil this month and recently shot an amazing editorial for Rodeo Magazine you should check out.

Here's someone wearing the studded Louboutins I will forever covet.

The Playground

If you need something to do tonight, there is this group show opening in Soho at The Puffin Room, featuring 20 artists from around the world that have explored their reluctance and personal struggles with abandoning their childhood (sounds like me!). There will also be some tunage from DJ Simon.

Stephen Sprouse: Rock on Mars

This is the scene outside the Louis Vuitton store today in Soho. Tonight it will be flooded with A-listers for the LV x Sprouse collection release party. The after-party at Deitch Projects will celebrate the opening of Rock on Mars, a Sprouse retrospective.

"Stephen Sprouse (1953-2004) was one of the most influential fashion designers of his time and a key figure in the dynamic mix of punk rock, wild style graffiti, and street influenced fashion that characterized the downtown New York community in the early 1980s. He was one of the first to build on the influence of Andy Warhol to create a fusion of art, music and fashion. He continued on a course that disavowed any division among these fields throughout his career."

The exhibition will be open to the public Jan 9 - Feb 28, 18 Wooster St, NY, NY.

Dark Systems

Deitch never lets me down with their constant rotation of fresh contemporary art. If you're looking for some things to do in NYC this week that don't require you to open your wallet, then stop by the opening for Dark Systems on Friday (6-9pm) to see some new work from Evan Gruzis. There's an interview up on Fecal Face if you want some background on the artist.

thanks gnarlitude for the heads up

Blame it on the dog

Peter Sutherland is one of my all-time favorite imagemakers. You may know him from his documentary photography but he's also worked on several films including PEDAL, a film and book about NYC bike messenger culture, and the skate documentary STOKED: The Rise and Fall of Gator. He has contributed editorial work for Vice over the years and been in many exhibitions around the world. I saw his solo show in spring of 2006 at the Reed Space and was blown away by his photos. Starting this friday, ATM Gallery will host a selection of Peter's sculptures, photographs, and video. There will be an opening reception from 6-8pm. The gallery is in Chelsea at 621 West 27th Street.

US Topshop

So by now you know NYC is getting its very own Topshop. Well, they were a bit ambitious with the opening date (originally slated for mid October) and now it's not expected to open until November. As a consolation prize, Topshop will open a US e-commerce site on Tuesday so you can shop till your heart's content. You could always order from the UK site but who wants to deal with the pound and shipping across the Atlantic? Apparently you can win some Kate Moss t-shirt too.

If you live in LA, you should go to this.
