Ashish SS14

When NYFW ends and all eyes turn to London, one of the collections I look forward to the most is Ashish. He's the man that can work sequins like a puppet master, and if money weren't an issue, my closet would be that much more sparkly. For Spring, Ashish took inspiration from a party girl's hangover trip to her local corner store. This came through in the Coca-cola emblazoned tops, tribal jewelry, grocery bags, and multicultural influences that reflect the diversity of the shop owners. The party girl in me (and there's a lot of it) is swooning over so many of the pieces. Not to mention, Coca-cola never goes out of style.. just sayin.

All eyes on us

It's "that time of the year" again...FASHION WEEK. The very words send the average person's eyeballs on a quick spin around their sockets, but most people reading this blog probably give at least half a shit. A big part of that is seeing what all the cool kids going to the circus wore. Well imagine if your fave 90s cartoon characters attended fashion week- what shows would they go to and what would they wear? Italian illustrator, Michele Moricci contemplated that with Swagger New York and the results are pretty spot on (although I think Beavis & Butthead would be more likely to wear the real deal gear from Santa Cruz versus Jeremy Scotts ripoffs).

Reading between the Lines

Rihanna showed off a new hair color and a whole lot more at Gareth Pugh's show in Paris yesterday. Although I appreciate her amazing fashion risks(if I had her body I wouldn't be shy either), I think she could have stepped it up with the footwear choice. Those heels are a bit "pedestrian" for edgy RiRi.

The graphically aware

Two of the most eye-popping collections at London this season came from Basso & Brooke and Josh Goot. The labels aren't strangers to color-blocking and digital prints, but still managed to mix things up and show some hot things for next season. As a graphic designer, I can really appreciate the thought processes and bold use of color that went into every piece.

Basso & Brooke (below) looked to pop art legend Jeff Koons and the black and white world of Herb Ritts for inspiration. You can really see they pushed their concept to great lengths and kept silhouettes fairly simple so the prints could do the talking. That first dress kills it!

Josh Goot's Aussie roots really shown through for spring with loose, casual separates and prints that remind you of surfboards and swimsuits. I could really go for some of those 2-color trousers and the bitmap long-sleeved shirt...and that tank is THE BOMB! Did I really just say that?

Strawberry punch

Scottish designer Louise Gray got her start as a textile designer, if you didn't guess that already that by looking at her artsy, off-kilter creations. She's spent the last few seasons building on her signature look of vibrantly-hued, boldy textured garments and I'll definitely be following this girl as I love what she's doing. Her Spring 2010 line was bursting with energy and color from head to toe. My favorite print was scrawled white on black grafitti craziness that she used throughout.

The kids I can count on

Now that NYFW is just about wrapped up, I thought I'd pick a few of my fave, more wearable looks for spring. For the most part, I was missing the "WOAH, did I really just see that?" factor which I will inevitably have to hold my breath for until London Fashion Week kicks into gear. I spied a lot of white, sheer, asymmetric tops and dresses, and more cut-outs....I guess not a whole lot of new, but a slight progression of the trends we've gotten used to by this point.

Proenza Schouler
Although the boys had some eye-popping prints in their collection, I most liked the looks that took the idea of shirts tied around the waist, and incorporated it into actual pieces. Those sci-fi bug eye shades are sick and the thick tube necklaces were amazing too (love when jewelry findings are huge).

Rad Hourani
Rad stuck with what he does best which is structured tailoring and skinny pants with unexpected details. I want slinky legs!!

VPL
Victoria Bartlett's spring theme was anatomy, most obvious in the thick twisted knit harnesses (?) referencing the skeletal structure. Her color palette included a lot of soft neutrals and oranges, but had a calming effect with the sheer fabrics overtop of of sequined undergarments.

Zero + Maria Cornejo
Maria keeps it real, with cool, comfortable fashion that has an edge without sacrificing wearability. I love the geometric one-sided sandals and crescent bag. Maria debuted swimwear this season too which I look forward to.

Helmut Lang
Although there's no more Helmut, Nicole and Michael Colovos have continued to push what we come to expect from the label, and are introducing a denim line in the spring which looks promising.

We like to party

I'm not a huge Marc by Marc fan, but I appreciate his playful take on styling and accessories each season. The necklaces Marc used in his spring show this week though I thought were really unique. NY Mag compares them to bike locks which I can see, but I got rave flashbacks. Nonetheless, I think they are really cool, even if they look like novelty jewelry and would like to see them against a more neutral palette to play down the cutesy effect.

Lightning strikes more than twice

I KNEW after seeing some of Risto's line in store at Assembly last month, that he wouldn't disappoint at NYFW. For me personally, the digital printing on fabric trend hasn't gotten old, and in fact, I love seeing new ideas explored using this method. Risto's touch tends to explore the method on more delicate fabrics to contrast the boldness of an all over print. I've done died and gone to heaven after seeing this lightning print dress.

While not as much of an impact when used on a smaller scale, it is still stunning on tops and sheer gloves.

All the young dudes

So on Saturday, after checking out Katie Gallagher's presentation at Tribeca Grand along with a few other friends, we started to head home, when our plans changed for the better. One of my friends realized she couldn't make it to the Alexander Wang show due to last-minute work commitments, so we grabbed the invites from her (after many thank yous) and headed up to Pier 94. Kate Lanphear, DVF, Anna Wintour, Terry Richardson, Kim Gordon, and Lykke Li were just a few of the familiar faces I saw on the bleachers. I was pretty stoked, nonetheless, and when the drum beats started (Alex used a stellar mix from Major Lazer), my heartbeat sped up with the music.

There's Kate with her hot-ass haircut.

After the show, I channeled my inner Jak & Jil to document some of the scene.

I love all the blue!

Amazing eyelash print....

Killer shoes

Hanne was rocking the Wang creepers and was very kind to let me take her picture.

Where can I get this umbrella!!?

Last but not least, ERIN.

Downtown, everything's waiting for you

The weather on Saturday was being crabby so thought it would be a good time to throw on my new hat. I never was much of a hat person, except for the obligatory beanie in the winter, but I saw this at Uniqlo and knew I needed it. It will come in handy for many a bad hair day! I'm trying to get better about getting "style shots" out and about, and thought the subway platform would be very NY of me, if not the all-black ensemble.

Space tribe

I have to say I was a little bit jealous when my friend texted me from the Vena Cava show at Milk yesterday. Lisa and Sophie, the designers behind Vena Cava, are such cool ladies and I loved seeing that their inspiration this time around came from graphic wall murals of South Africa's Ndebele tribe. Can I just say I MUST get some matte purple lipstick! I know this will be hard to pull off, but I'm fearless. There were a lot of interesting details in their show, from the huge visor and stud embellishments, to that safety pin camisole which WILL, without a doubt, inspire many a DIY. The silver platform booties courtesy of Robert Clergerie were amazing in every way possible.

Katie Gallagher to present her first full collection

One collection I'm really excited for is Katie Gallagher's who will have her SS10 presentation, entitled Veil, on Saturday. The folks at GrandLife helped put together the show for the RISD grad, which will be held at Tribeca Grand. I'm so sure this girl is going somewhere, and I would make room in your schedule if you haven't already to see her presentation. Coming off a recent stint at threeASFOUR, Katie has no doubt picked up a lot of skills and influences for her own more sculptural work. Papermag did a recent interview with her you should check out and also gave us a little peek behind her spring line- I love seeing designer's sketches. Check back for images from the show!

Don't look behind you

Team Supreme has a hell of a lineup for this season! The SS10 showpackage, shot by Hanna Liden, is a little more roughed up than the special edition V Magazine covers featuring the Supreme women (shot by Paul Rowland), but both seem to go for a witchy vibe. The models aim to scare with terror in their icy eyes, and seem plucked out of a horror movie taking place around a camping trip in the woods. And the styling is just that- straddling the woods and the city, favoring looks that are built on layers and boyish appeal. I think these cards will book these chicks some badass jobs, and as one of my fave agencies, I'm rooting for them all the way.
