You better get out of the sun before you melt

My friend Rachael filled me in about a new photography exhibit featuring the work of Akila Berjaoui opening tomorrow at her gallery in Brooklyn, Human NYC. As soon as I saw the flyer, I was instantly transported to crystal beaches and turquoise surf. Needless to say, I'll be swinging by the opening party on Saturday night and you should too if you'll be around.

Summer forecast

Susan and Chrissie Miller are definitely one of the coolest and most talented mother/daughter combos in NYC. Susan is my fave astrologer (get her app!) and Chrissie is the girl behind the most kickass t-shirt line, Sophomore, and they are teaming up this Saturday for an event. It will be held at 143, Chrissie Miller and Lindsey Thornburg's boutique in LES. You should like, totally go. I predict you'll be happy you did.

Opening tonight!

Hey New Yorkers- it's springtime and the city is ramping up to give you more ways to use up your time. Over the next month, THIRTYDAYSNY (in collaboration with Family of LA) will be taking over a gallery space in Tribeca where they will host weekly events that merge the art & culture universe. Look out for this newspaper designed by Ben Jones of Paper Rad (who also designed the space) being passed out around the city with all the event details (calender also here). Put that shit on your fridge and do something with yourself this month- Kim Gordon & Thurston Moore this Saturday and SNL's Fred Armisen on Sunday!

What to do without me

I'm going away for labor day weekend, so I won't be around the neighborhood, but here's a bunch of fash-related stuff to check out for all you fellow Brooklynites/NYers.

First up, the 3-day Oak sample sale starts tomorrow at their Williamsburg location. They will be combining sale stock from both of their locations, as well as discounting select samples from the Oak line.

DIYed

On Sunday, Jess and I spent a few hours at the Urban Outfitters in Soho for the DIY or DIE event. It was great to see some of our favorite blogging ladies in the flesh and learn a thing or two about sewing, studding, shredding, slashing, and crocheting chains. I had a lot to learn seeing as I do not work in the fashion industry but thankfully the ladies of Six Six Sick, Nikki, Pam, Jeralyn, and Sarah made it seem super easy and I'm confident I can do a lot of this stuff on my own now!

A big thanks goes to UO for hosting such a cool event and for the complimentary rad gift bags that included among other things some yummy sparkling juice by Izze, UO nail polish (I got green!) and a sweet xeroxed how-to guide for the next rainy day. I only managed to get a few decent shots but you can see more coverage of the event over at Badlooking and Dirty Flaws.

Alter Bashment recap

On Saturday, I stopped by Alter Men's store for their Red Stripe event. I stop in the women's store on a weekly basis, but I always forget to venture across the street to the men's store. Lucky for me, this time was totally worth it. They just got in the new sunglass collection from Cheap Monday! SO cute and very cheap at $35 bucks a pop- these wont last very long! The rest of the spring collection is amazing as well- full on men's cheap monday suits for under $300 and plaid button downs for days! For those of you not in NYC, they do ship- check out their blog for more info.

Power and Fashion

There's an interesting talk tonight in NYC focusing on fashion's influence on culture and how it shapes identity in the world. New York Times writer Guy Trebay will be joined by Isabel Toledo and Gabi Asfour, designers behind the amazing Threeasfour, to discuss the power of fashion. Eugenia Paulicelli, Professor of Italian and Comparative Literature and founder of the Graduate Center's Fashion Studies concentration, will moderate. I really wish I could attend, but I have to do bloody taxes.

Kaws Solo Show in NYC

I'm stoked to announce that this Thursday, world famous Brooklyn-based artist Kaws will host a solo show at Gering & López Gallery in NYC. As cliche as it sounds, this guy is BIG in Japan. He opened his own store in Tokyo two years ago called Original Fake, where he releases new products weekly. I have mad respect for this guy as a fellow creative, because he has successfully blurred the lines between fine art and mass produced merchandise, allowing his vision to reach a much wider audience.



But aside from that, his work kicks ass and if I had the dough, I'd have a huge Kaws painting hanging on my wall right now. There will be an opening reception from 6-8pm on Thursday featuring some of his recent paintings and sculptures incorporating his usual cast of characters. I'm sure the opening will be crazy but if you can't make that, the show will be up till December 23.

Vice Late Nights

It's CMJ week in NYC which means music madness, sooo pretty much like any other week in this city. But there are a few special events going on like this free Vice series the next few nights. Krallice, an epic third wave black metal band from NYC, is playing tomorrow night. RSVP here kiddies.

Chanel Mobile Art NYC

You may or may not have heard about this epic event that is coming soon to Central Park. Well basically, Chanel decided to pay an homage to their legendary quilted bag by asking 20 international artists to use it as the inspiration for a work of art that would be part of a traveling installation. My favorite architect, Zaha Hadid, was asked to design the container that houses the gallery. So far, the show has been to Tokyo and Hong Kong and NYC is next up! Construction on the site is happening right now and from October 20 to November 9, you can see the installation in Central Park. The event is free of charge but there will be a high demand for tickets, so luckily you can book them now (up to 4 tickets per guest so you can bring your pals). WESC Party, This Thursday

This thursday, WESC will be hosting an in-store party at Bloomingdale's. There will be good tunes from some local djs including our girl Lauren Flax, free booze (of course), and best of all these special headphones for party guests! I need a new pair so I'm so there.

Labor day coney style

Supposedly, this is the last summer for Astroland at Coney Island. Bands and burlesque equal one hell of a Labor Day...

Rainbow Rhythms

Ebony Bones' music is a refreshing blend of progressive beats as colorful as her amazing outfits. Paper Mag recently included her in their list of the "25 Most Stylish Songbirds", and she was in good company with femmes like Karen O and Bjork. This Sunday she'll be playing a free show at McCarren Pool, which I plan to attend since I can't make it the night before to her other appearance at Santos. Get there early though, because she's opening for Yo La Tengo— and something tells me all of Williamsburg will be there to see them.

nick zinner at fuse gallery

Yeah Yeah Yeahs' guitarist Nick Zinner has a show up now at Fuse Gallery (inside East Village hotspot Lit.) The show, entitled "It's OK, Don't Look at the Road", documents Zinner's experience as a musician in a successful band as he tours the globe.
